"The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug," is Peter Jackson's fifth Tolkien film. It is part two in the three-movie "Hobbit" prequel to the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy.

The Desolation of Smaug, which is a rousing adventure film that manages to, for the most part, thrill and excite with its extended running time of 160 minutes.

The most exciting part of Desolation of Smaug in my opinion was the scene with Jackson's two pugs, (Stan and Fergus) who are seen walking on the quay in Lake-town sniffing around and running past the feet of the locals!

I was wondering about the existence of pugs in Middle-Earth....

Besides directing the trilogy, Jackson also appeared briefly in each of them. In The Fellowship of the Ring (2001) and The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (2013), he was a drunken man in Bree named Albert Dreary. In The Two Towers (2002), he was a Rohirrim Warrior. In Return of the King (2003), he was a Corsair killed by an arrow fired by Legolas. In The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (2012), he was a Dwarf of the Lonely Mountain Dwarf running from the rampaging dragon Smaug in the synopsis-scene.

In Peter Jackson's film trilogies of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, most of the crew, their families, fans of Tolkien's work and the director himself made cameos in all the movies.

Peter Jackson cast another great choice other than his pugs in Desolation of Smag... my personal hero Mr. Stephen Colbert! Which Jackson says of him, "I have never met a bigger Tolkien fan in my life". Colbert's entire family can be spotted in the film also!

There are so many great Cameo appearances in Peter Jackson's films they are too great to list here but you can read extensivly on this great site called Wikia- One Wiki to rule them all.

I hope you've enjoyed the pugs and other tidbits from the movie.

Thanks for reading! Pugs and Kisses,
