I first heard about ThunderShirt from out-of-town relatives. Their dog was overwhelmed upon arriving. Restless and pacing until they put her ThunderShirt on. Her behavior instantly changed to calm and content. It was incredible to see the immediate soothing.
It wasn't until recent holiday trips that we decided to purchase some since our dogs don't travel long-distances very well. Even a three hour trip is difficult due to their anxious car behavior. The Thunderworks company (website) states 80% of dogs show improvement. Worth a shot with our fur-babies we figured.
We unpacked the shirts and read through all the info. The shirt basically just drapes over your dogs back, and then has Velcro straps to tie around the chest and ribcage. Tightening or loosening the shirt will then add the appropriate amount of pressure to relax your pet. The manual suggested a reward for our pets when the shirt goes on and off, as well as, letting them know the location of their ThunderShirt, so if they feel anxious they will go to it.
Both shirts fit great on them. Very adjustable as well as fashionable! Also, as suggested, we tried the shirts on under normal circumstances to test the waters. For a few short hours it was amazing. We noticed the dogs weren't following us everywhere. They just laid on the couch comfortably. Also, the pugs constant licking ceased. We weren't even traveling yet and boy are they great!
What followed the next day was the most pleasant 8 hour car ride with the dogs we've ever had. It's not magic but it's a huge improvement. After several uses we give it high praise. In fact, maybe we'll try the companies new ThunderLeash for leash pulling.
